Job Description


Management responsibilities include the management of the orthopedic patient care unit, nursing personnel and the delivery of patient care on an assigned shift. Clinical responsibilities include direct and continuing responsibility for the nursing care of patients on an assigned shift; activities assuring comfort, safety, dignity, and continuity; the evaluation and assistance in upgrading all, serving as a role model for shift staff. Leadership responsibilities include the provision of leadership and direction on an assigned shift, functioning as a resource person, working collaboratively with others to achieve the goals of patient care unit; supporting the educational and teaching efforts of the unit. Staff development responsibilities include assisting in providing learning experiences for shift staff and students. Serves as a resource. Researcher responsibilities include assisting and identifying researchable patient problems; implementing and applying research as directed. Consultant provides administrative and clinical consultation on an assigned shift. 


Graduate from an accredited school of nursing and current RN license for the state of California. Knowledge of principles and practices of patient care. Develop the principles of sound fiscal management. Develop management principles and practices. Ability to lead, make sound clinical and administrative judgment related to patient care and to personnel administering that care. Ability to counsel and teach. Competency in speaking English clearly and distinctly using appropriate vocabulary and grammar. Ability to organize workload, set priorities which reflect the relative importance of the job responsibilities. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationship with staff, patients, and families. Ability to write concisely and maintain written communication. Working knowledge of University, Medical Center and Departmental policies and procedures. Ability to support institutional standards and operations systems.

BSN/MSN required

Current experience in Orthopedics as an RN, required
